Ah, the joy of Faery. Always here to delight and heal, the Shining Folk have such appeal. They tend our Mother, hold her dear and guide us to our healing mirror. The plants they tend, we call them weeds but oh so well our Spirits they feed. Remember, ask permission before you pick anything. One sure way to kill any healing mojo that the Fae would love to bestow upon you is by being rude and disrespectful. They work really hard to tend to these plants, acknowledge that and be sure to leave a little token for them. They like shiny things…
Chickweed: Delicious spring tonic herb. Low growing, branching habit with tiny white flowers that look like lacy stars. She has a hairy leg, but only on one side. She will detoxify you, nourish you and heal you in ways you didn’t even know you needed. Rich in vitamin c, chlorophyll and minerals.
Lamb’s Quarters: It’s everywhere. That’s because you need to eat it! More vitamin c and iron than spinach with zero work. All you have to do it pick her, thank her, wash her and eat her.
Dandelion/Catear: Ditto. Ever wonder why so many “weeds” show up in your lawn and garden? The Great Mother is trying to tell you something and what a beautiful message and delivery. She is so graceful, too bad many of us want to spray her loving gifts with poison. Every part of the dandelion/catear is edible, I used the leaf in the pesto. Great detoxifier and spring tonic. Excellent for your liver. Eat some!
Garlic Mustard: The one plant that most everyone will tell you to break out the agent orange. Such a shame. I love to see people froth when talking about so called invasive plants as if they are about to swallow up babies and puppies. Take a big step back and ask yourself why they are there in the first place. Did you disturb the soil and leave it barren and uncovered? Did you create an imbalance somehow, create a void that She is trying to heal? Is your body crying out for nourishment and healing that only a creation of the Great Mother can heal? Too much garlic mustard? I say eat it! Make pesto, salad, vinegars… wild weed phyllo pie… eat it, your body will thank you for it.
Plantain: It’s in every un-tainted/un-poisoned lawn/landscape. Both narrow leaved and common broad leaf varieties are extremely healing and nourishing.
Violet Leaves: So pretty. It is also has one of the highest vitamin C levels of all plants. Delish.
Wood Sorrel: Lemony hearts. Adds a little zing to your pesto.
2 big handfuls of chickweed, lambs quarters, dandelion and plantain.
1 handful of violet leaves, ok some flowers, too.
5 sprigs of wood sorrel
3 sprigs of garlic mustard
Wash herbs and de-stem if necessary. Place in bowl of food processor or in your mortar if you want to ride old school.
Add 2 handfuls of raw walnuts (my handful is 1/2 cup)
1 handful of sprouted/dehydrated sunflower seeds (Optional)
4 cloves raw garlic
1 to 1-1/2 cups grated pecorino roman cheese ( can sub. parmesan but it has to be top quality or it will taste cheap)
Salt and pepper to taste
1/4 cup olive oil ( I used basil infused olive oil left over from last summer)
A small squirt of lemon juice (to help maintain color)
Grind it all together and taste to adjust seasoning/cheese. Store in the refrigerator under a layer of oil.
